Pros And Cons Of Naming Your Dog After Pro Athlete

Choosing a name for your dog can be a very difficult decision. Your dog’s name is something that they will have for the rest of their life, and it’s something that should mean something to you and not be entirely embarrassing. (Remember, you will be calling this name out loud, so choose wisely.)

Many dog owners decide to name their dog after something or someone they like or admire. In fact, many dogs are named after professional athletes, whether recent athletes or professional legends.

If you’re considering naming your dog after a professional athlete, the following are some pros and cons to consider before doing so.

Pro: It makes the naming decision easier.

If there is a professional athlete that you truly admire, then naming your dog will be easy. You will already have a great name choice, which means that your dog will have a name that means something to you right off the bat. You will not need to waste time trying to think of the perfect name.

Con: You’ll be taunted.

You are going to come across people who don’t like the athlete, so they will taunt you about the choice of name for your dog. While you may be okay with this, it’s still important that you know it will happen so you can prepare yourself for rebuttal.

Pro: It makes you a super fan.

You’re a fan of the athlete for a reason, and naming your dog after the athlete will make you an even bigger super fan. If you already have a ton of sports-related gear, and if you already have everything to do with the athlete, naming your dog after them will make you the biggest super fan around.

Con: The athlete may get traded.

If you name your dog after a current player for a certain team that you love, it is possible that the athlete will get traded—and they may get traded to a team you despise. It’s important that you keep this in mind in case a trade ever occurs and the player is no longer on the team. You will not be able to change your dog’s name, so you will have to grit your teeth and live with it.

Pro: It gives them a unique name.

If you name your dog after an athlete that’s not as popular or as famous, your dog will have a truly unique name. You will not be naming your dog something normal or conventional, which means that your dog will certainly stand out from the crowd. Plus, having a dog with a unique name is always a great conversation starter.

Con: You’re dealing with a public figure.

Let’s face it. Athletes and celebrities are human and they make mistakes. If your athlete makes a big mistake, such as Michael Vick’s dog fighting scandal, you will have to deal with your dog having their name. This means that you will spend a great deal of your time explaining how you named your dog after the athlete before the scandal.
